Stage 1- Desired Results

Established Goals:  RI.6.6 Determine the author’s point of view or purpose in a text and explain how it is conveyed in the text.
Understandings: Students will understand that… Authors write to persuade, inform and entertain us. Authors write in 1st,2nd, and 3rd person. Point of view is based on facts. Their point of view may differ from the author.	Essential Questions How can the reader use the text to determine why the text was written? How can we use inductive reasoning to determine the author’s purpose? How do readers identify the author’s purpose in a text.
Students will know: To look for specific words or topics to determine the author’s point of view. What are pronouns and how effective they are. How to determine the author’s feeling?	Students will be able to: Determine the author’s point of view and distinguish how it is different from your own by looking strong details. Voice their own opinion and compare it to the author’s based on a specific topic. Convert 3rd person point of view to 1st person point of view by adding feelings and emotions.

Established Goals:

W.6.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts and information through the selection, organisation,and analysis of relevant content.

Understandings Students will understand that.. Their writing ideas should be organized. The topic should be developed with relevant facts, definitions, and concrete details. Their writing should maintain a formal style. Writers follow writing process to collect, plan, draft and revised their pieces.	Essential Questions How can writing techniques help us express an important experience in our lives? How can we use the writing process to dig deeper into our experiences? Why do authors choose different point of view?
Students will know… The importance of stamina in writing. How informational writing is similar to and different from other genres of writing. How to write an introduction(opening statement) and conclusion( the section that follows from the information presented by restating the main point and reflecting on the topic).	Students will be able to.. Use transitional words to clarify relationships among ideas and concepts. Improve their work, writers study mentor texts, rubrics, and feedback from peers and teachers.

Backward Design Approach

The Backward Design Approach is when an instructor first considers the learning goals of a lesson. These learning goals then embody the knowledge and skills instructors want their students to learn when they are finished with a lesson.

This approach is focused on student learning and understanding. There are three stages in this approach.

Three stages of Backward Design

1.    Identify desired result-this is your learning goals.

2.    Determine acceptable evidence- consider the assessment and performance tasks students will complete in order to demonstrate evidence of understanding and learning e.g. practice problems, short answer quizzes.

3.    Plan learning experiences and instruction- this is where instructors begin to consider how they will teach. This is when instructional strategies and learning will be created.
